Meet Our 2Q Ambassadors





STPH RECOGNIZES 2Q AMBASSADORS


St. Tammany Parish Hospital recognizes several staff members each quarter who consistently display excellence in customer service and exemplify the hospital's CARES standards all employees follow to provide quality customer service:

  • Create a positive first impression
  • Anticipate customer needs
  • Respect patients, staff and others
  • Efficiently deliver service
  • Safety, first and foremost
Ambassadors are selected based on their ability to demonstrate the characteristics set forth in the CARES standards, and any staff member, physician or volunteer is eligible to be nominated as an ambassador. The second quarter 2015 Ambassadors are:


CHRIS O’DONNELL, CARDIAC REHAB

Chris is always positive and creates a great first impression. He is cheerful and makes exercise fun for his cardiac rehab patients.

Chris always asks, “Is there anything I can do?” He volunteers to stay late for Cardiac Rehab and works extra shifts for other departments if needed.

He often offers suggestions to increase patient participation in all phases of Cardiac Rehab. That’s why he implemented an education program and blood pressure monitoring for the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab Fitness program at the West St. Tammany YMCA. He even organized a 90th birthday party for a YMCA Fitness patient who has been exercising with STPH Cardiac Rehab for 12 years.

Chris readily volunteers to represent STPH in the community with presentations at the West St. Tammany YMCA and at Abita Seniors. He also volunteers to help coach various sports in the community, including assisting the Archbishop Hannan High School baseball team with weight training.

 

SHIRLEY GATLIN, 2 WEST

Shirley is a role model when it comes to rounding with a purpose. She has a huge amount of understanding and respect for patients and their families.

She creates a safe and caring environment for her patients and their families, not because it’s our goal but because her heart and soul are dedicated to her patients. Shirley treats her patients as family members, and she is proactive and independent in caring for her patients.

Colleagues say that when they walk onto the unit and see Shirley’s smiling face, they know the night won’t be too bad no matter what happens.

Her support for her co-workers and teamwork mentality create the best possible environment for our patients. She gives 100 percent of herself each day, which is why co-workers say she is a shining example of what a great CNA should be.

 

SCOTT SMITH, CATH LAB

Scott always maintains a high level of professionalism. He is respectful and compassionate to all he comes in contact with, and he patiently listens to each patient’s concerns and reports them to the appropriate person.

Scott greets all patients, family members and staff with a smile at all times.

Scott always offers valuable input with patient care being his highest concern. After learning something new, he always shares that knowledge and helps colleagues with the learning process.

He makes safety a priority not only for patients but for his co-workers, who say he will go the extra mile to make a difference in the everyday experience for patients, visitors, physicians and colleagues.

Physicians hold Scott in high regard professionally and frequently brainstorm with him during procedures to provide patients with the best treatment options.

 

DEMETRIA TOLIVER, HOME HEALTH AND HOSPICE

“Dee” is a hard act to follow. Once she is assigned to a patient and family, they are hooked. If another aide has to go in her place, they often say, “No offense, but we love Dee and will just wait for her to come back.”

She will go above and beyond to make sure all tasks important to a patient and their family are completed, from washing and styling someone’s mother’s hair to changing her schedule to accommodate the patient. She takes time to explain things to patients and families, such as why she is putting lotion on a patient or why washing their hair is so important.

Recently, while at a patient’s home, Dee noticed the patient’s wife seemed gloomy. She said, “We have to lighten the mood. “So she began dancing to make the patient and his wife laugh.

She looks for the little things that make a difference.
