Parenting tips: Rolling out the red carpet for your little VIP

Making a child feel welcome starts with making sure they’ve got a comfortable space in which to play or work. (Stock photo)

At St. Tammany Health System’s Parenting Center, we are privileged enough to work with children during the first couple of years of their lives, so we know a thing or two about the importance of creating an optimum space for children.

Below are tips provided to you by The Parenting Center to help with creating an optimum environment for your young child, whether it’s a work space, a play space or some other place where you want them to feel comfortable:

  • Make sure things are “kid sized,” from tables and chairs to beds, sinks and toilets. You want them to feel like the space is made for them. Can you imagine walking into a space and realizing that everything is twice your size? It can be a little intimidating for young children.
  • Make sure things are “eye level” and easily accessible. Do not put toys or items they may need on a day-to-day basis in a place where they cannot reach them.
  • If you have an infant, place a mirror horizontally. That way, they can see themselves playing and can interact with their image.
  • Make sure your environment is safe. You do not want to set up an environment where your child isn’t able to wonder freely in fear of them getting hurt or injured.

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs and the Parenting Center is here for you. If encouraging your children is something your family is struggling with, please reach out. We are here to help. At $20, we offer Parenting Coaching by appointment, so call the Parenting Center to set up an appointment with one of our educators for guidance and assistance on how to help you create moments of encouragement within your daily lives.

Below, find some upcoming classes available. You can also learn more about the Parenting Center at StTammany.health/ParentingCenter, including a full listing of upcoming classes, activities and playgroups.
