This week brings National Healthcare Decisions Day, and St. Tammany Health System’s Palliative Care team is using the opportunity to raise awareness about an important but often neglected area of healthcare: Advance Care Planning.
On Tuesday (April 18, 2023), the health system will host a free workshop at which attendees will learn the steps necessary to communicate and codify their medical preferences, including with regard to end-of-life decisions, should they be unable to voice their desires when the time arises.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Tammany Cancer Center, a campus of Ochsner Medical Center (900 Ochsner Blvd., Covington).
Among other things, the event will include guidance on creating a living will, also known as an advance directive, which is a statement expressing your desires regarding your medical treatment; and completing a LaPOST document, which is a binding physician’s order outlining your wishes for medical treatment and goals of care.
Learn more about these processes in the document attached below or by visiting la-post.org/consumers. You can also learn more at StTammany.health/Palliative.
