Art Project for Cancer Survivors
Art Project Opportunity for Cancer Survivors
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital has been invited to participate in Sculpture for New Orleans' FLAG public art installation, which is turning its focus to cancer awareness in line with October's national breast cancer awareness month. Various cancer centers and cancer awareness organizations will be creating banners that will be hung from posts installed on the neutral ground at the intersection of Canal St. and Jefferson Davis Parkway, New Orleans, in October. The banners will be returned to each center/organization in November.
Throughout the month of September , there will be a table in the lobby of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital with canvas laid out for individuals to add colorful touches to create a banner. No artistic talent necessary! ANY cancer survivor and caregiver is invited to put their thoughts and feelings on the banner using words, symbols, pictures or any way they choose. This collaborative project will be accomplished using paints, markers, felt appliques, feathers, buttons, glitter etc. We have some basic supplies currently and will be adding more as the weeks progress. You are welcome to bring any art supplies as well.
FLAG is grounded in the belief that art heals, art inspires and art fosters communication and understanding. FLAG's genesis was as a Katrina 10th anniversary memorial, providing New Orleans youth with a venue to communicate their thoughts and feelings, in collaboration with established local artists, through the creation of banners hung from posts installed on the neutral ground at the intersection of Canal Street and Jefferson Davis Parkway. The installation was initially going to stand for one year. But the response to it has been so positive that it is remaining a piece of public art, with banners changing to explore different themes and invite new participants to lend their voices to the community dialogue.
