Being a new big brother or big sister isn’t always easy. To help youngsters manage that sometimes confusion transition, the St. Tammany Health System Parenting Center’s latest Baby Chat for Siblings class is set for this weekend.

The free program, scheduled to take place Saturday (May 16) from 10 to 11:30 a.m., is open to the public and is designed for new siblings ages 4 and older. It is currently being offered online only via Zoom due to social distancing concerns.

This fun and interactive class caters to the soon-to-be-siblings of a newborn brother or sister. Class facilitators will work with children to help them understand the changes that occur when Mom and Dad bring home a new baby.

Among other things, the sibling will learn safe and proper ways to handle newborns, change diapers and swaddle a baby. Parents are asked to make sure siblings-to-be have a baby doll or stuffed animal available during the class.

Participants can register online through the “calendar of events” link at STPH.org/ParentingCenter, after which they will be contacted via email with a Zoom link and password.

For details or to ask any questions about the class, email adill@stph.org or call (985)898-4435.

The Baby Chat for Siblings program is one of a number of regular classes offered by The Parenting Center, which is dedicated to promoting confidence and competence in new parents in addition to encouraging optimal development of children to enhance the well-being of local families as a whole.
