COVINGTON – Local gastroenterologists Drs. Phillips Jenkins and Catherine Murray are bringing relief to Northshore residents who suffer from chronic heartburn and acid reflux - and it's only available at St. Tammany Parish Hospital via the Stretta procedure.

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a condition that develops when the back-flow of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications. Chronic heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD, but there may be numerous less common symptoms, and serious health problems can result if it is not treated properly. 

“GERD affects tens of millions of people and most begin treatment with lifestyle and dietary changes or medication,” Dr. Jenkins said. “But, up to 30 percent of the population does not respond to available medications for GERD, and many do not wish to be on these medications long-term because of potential side effects. Using the Stretta procedure can offer a highly effective and ultra-minimally invasive alternative to invasive surgery or implants.”

The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to strengthen and improve the function of the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent regurgitation or reflux. Clinical studies on the procedure show symptom relief lasting from four to 10 years.

The outpatient procedure is performed in the hospital’s Endoscopy department, and patients typically can resume normal activities within a few days.
