Today (Thursday, March 2, 2023) is National Hospitalist Day, a time set aside to recognize the contributions of the thousands of hospitalists nationwide – and the 40-plus hospitalists at St. Tammany Health System’s flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
“Professional, knowledgeable and deeply compassionate, our STHS hospitalists really are the unsung heroes every day – and night – in our Covington hospital,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Torcson said. “That’s been true for a long time but particularly so in the past three years of COVID-19. Even in the face of the challenges and difficulties of COVID-19, their performance has been truly extraordinary. Our health system and our entire community owe them a debt of gratitude.”
Hospital medicine is a specialty dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. Additionally, hospital medicine practitioners actively support the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and practices to facilitate optimal continuity of care and enhance the performance of hospitals and healthcare systems.
In other words: We wouldn’t have much of a hospital without our hospitalists.
In addition to making a difference, Dr. Daniel Ilie -- a hospitalist at St. Tammany Health System since 2008 -- said the collaborative work environment at STHS is both rewarding and intellectually stimulating.
"Hospitalists care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions, adding to the opportunity to expand their knowledge and expertise not only in a broad range of medical specialties but also adding to the opportunity of making an impact on improving patient care at organizational level by being part in quality improvement," Dr. Ilie said.
