Applications being accepted for STHS 2021 Collegiate Shadowing Program

St. Tammany Health System’s Summer Collegiate Shadowing Program is now accepting applications for summer 2021. The application deadline is April 14.

Program description

The Summer Collegiate Shadowing Program provides an opportunity for college students to observe or shadow a healthcare employee in order to develop a broader understanding of their intended field of study. Participants must be at least 18 years of age to participate in the Shadowing program.

Purpose

The purpose of the Collegiate Shadowing Program is to provide the best learning opportunity for the individual seeking a medical/healthcare career path.  The Shadowing Program provides:

  • Opportunities to observe healthcare in practice.
  • Exposure to various healthcare career options.
  • Information about the requirements to enter various healthcare careers.
  • Positive role models.

The Shadowing Program is open to persons who are actively enrolling in a 4-year healthcare degree program that requires hours of observation as a part of the application process. Observation areas include: respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, etc. (There are no observations with physicians or in surgical services as part of this program.) Participants must be committed to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours.

Important dates

Orientation to the Hospital and the Program is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19th, 2021 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Abita Room at St. Tammany Health System’s Covington hospital, 1202 S. Tyler St.  The program runs from May 24 to June 25, 2021.  Orientation includes explanation of policies and procedures of the hospital, explanation of the program and work schedule, and a tour of the facility.

Applications are due by Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Applicants will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis.
