Parenting tips: Is it potty time for your child?

Pooped out by the mere idea of trying to potty train your toddler? You’re not alone.

Potty training can be a difficult time for any parent or caregiver. Because every child is different, what works for one child in your family might not work for all of them – and that leaves many parents unsure even where to begin.

Fortunately, St. Tammany Health System’s Parenting Center is here to help. Below, find some key signs that might indicate your child is ready to begin the process of ditching the diapers once and for all:

  • Your child has the verbal skills. If your child can tell you that he or she has to potty, knows where the toilet is, what it’s used for, and is familiar with the bathroom and what goes on in there, chances are they’re ready to take the next step.
  • Your child is starting to take his or her diaper off. This is a big sign your child is ready to potty train. This shows us, as parents, that they are starting to get uncomfortable sitting in the dirty diaper, therefore they want it off.
  • Your child requires less frequent diaper changes. For example, if your child is able to make it through the night without wetting himself or herself, it might be potty time.
  • If your gut instinct is telling you that your child is ready … go for it! You know your child better than anybody and know whether they are ready or not. Trust yourself.

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs and the Parenting Center is here for you. If encouraging your children is something your family is struggling with, please reach out. We are here to help. At $20, we offer Parenting Coaching by appointment, so call the Parenting Center to set up an appointment with one of our educators for guidance and assistance on how to help you create moments of encouragement within your daily lives.
