FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 5/26/2020
STHS Nurse Residency Program Achieves National Accreditation
Only 2nd Nurse Residency Program in Louisiana to Achieve Accreditation
COVINGTON –The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has announced accreditation of St. Tammany Health System’s Nurse Residency Program, only the second health system in Louisiana and 161st in the United States, to achieve the recognition.
“The vision to create a transitional program that mentored our new graduates into becoming confident, critical thinkers goes back to 2008-2009,” STHS Chief Nursing Officer Kerry Milton said. “Our first group of residents to participate was in 2011. This recognition validates that our program promotes quality and safety by reducing nurse turnover, increasing job satisfaction and improving clinical competence. Congratulations to all the nurse leaders, educators, preceptors and residents that participated in the development, implementation, transformation and support of the program.”
ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation validates hospital residency or fellowship programs that transition registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) into new practice settings that meet rigorous, evidence-based standards for quality and excellence. Nurses in accredited transition programs, like STHS Nurse Residency Program, experience curricula that promote the acquisition of knowledge, skills and professional behaviors necessary to deliver safe, high-quality care.
“With ANCC Accreditation, our transitioning nurses gain the skills and confidence needed to perform effectively within a new practice setting,” Joan Coffman, STHS president/CEO, said. “Sincere congratulations to the dedicated team that pursued this well-deserved recognition of our vision, for their tenacity, professionalism and perseverance. I am grateful for their efforts to lift our mission to new heights.”
