St. Tammany Health System has again been named an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Disease Society of America, an honor conferred upon institutions that demonstrate excellence by integrating best practices in the challenging areas related to antimicrobial stewardship.
It is the only hospital on the Northshore, and one of only three in Louisiana, to earn the designation, which is valid for two years.
The Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence program was created in 2017 to single out institutions that demonstrate an ability to implement stewardship protocols, knowledge and clinical expertise, as well as provide ongoing education of medical staff and setting high standards.
The designation recognizes institutions that have created programs led by infectious diseases physicians and infectious-disease-trained pharmacists that are of the highest quality and have achieved standards aligned with evidence-based national guidelines.
The core criteria for the IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers of Excellence were developed by a work-group of infectious disease physicians and infectious-disease-trained pharmacists.
A total of 145 programs have received the designation since the program’s inception in 2017.
