St. Tammany Health System leaders joined with frontline healthcare workers on Friday (March 12) for a brief ceremony in solemn recognition of the diagnosis of the first COVID-positive patient at its Covington hospital one year ago, as well as the lives lost since then and the continued dedication of the health system’s caregivers.

The outdoor, socially distanced ceremony began with the lowering of the Louisiana state flag to half staff along with the health system’s own flag. That was followed by a moment of silent reflection and a blessing by STHS Chaplain Zac Ritchie.

“One year, and it feels like a lifetime,” Ritchie said. “We can all reflect back on this day a year ago. Everything stopped at once. We were filled with uncertainty as we felt our way through the fog of the pandemic. We went through peaks and valleys. We mourn with those who past and we continue to grieve with those who lost loved ones.”

STHS Chief Nursing Officer Kerry Milton then recognized the work of the health system’s healthcare heroes, making a point to stress that the past year has represented a massive team effort at STHS.

That includes the work of its nurses and doctors, Milton said, but also the respiratory therapists whose work has been so vital during the pandemic, as well as the physical therapists, phlebotomists, nursing assistants, environmental services workers and others who have played a role.

We're almost there. There's hope. ... Let's not let down our guard."

“They have continued to provide care willingly and skillfully for the last 364 days,” said Milton, saluting the STHS team’s unflagging efficiency, innovation, thirst for knowledge and – perhaps most of all – compassion.

STHS infectious disease specialist Dr. Mike Hill then concluded the event with a message of hope.

“Were almost there,” Dr. Hill said. “There’s hope. We’re giving out vaccines, over 10,000 vaccines so far, (with) more to come, and that’s the way out of this, along with masks and social distancing.

“Let’s not let down our guard,” he continued. “Let’s do it for our neighbors. Let’s do it for those who have died of COVID and in their memory.”

St. Tammany Health System’s first COVID-positive inpatient was diagnosed on March 13, 2020. Since then, it has admitted 1,222 COVID inpatients and diagnosed 1,626 additional outpatients. As of Friday morning (March 12), it had also performed 30,158 COVID tests and administered 14,508 vaccines.

Currently, it has seven COVID inpatients, down from a high of 66 in January.
