St. Tammany Health System’s United in Lung Health Power of Pearl campaign, a monthlong observation timed to coincide with National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, is back.
The second annual event will include a T-shirt sale, a special lung screening day and a one-mile community walk.
It all officially begins Nov. 1, although this year’s long-sleeve, moisture-wicking “No Grit, No Pearl” shirts are available for purchase online now. They will also be available in the St. Tammany Parish Hospital gift shop beginning this Thursday (Oct. 24, 2024) and can be purchased there via cash or credit card.
As part of the campaign, a National Lung Cancer Screening Day event will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Cordes Outpatient Pavilion and will offer lung cancer screenings for a special cash price of $119. Those receiving a scan can also get a free abdominal aorta ultrasound screening.
After that comes the campaign’s signature event, the second annual Power of Pearl Lung Cancer Walk and celebration, to be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Covington Trailhead.
This year’s walk is hosted by the city of Covington with presenting sponsor Chevron and will include live music by Tyler Kinchen & The Right Pieces. The first 200 walk registrants will receive a free beer courtesy of Abita Brewing.
The Power of Pearl Lung Cancer Walk is a chance to raise awareness of lung cancer screening opportunities as well as to honor those who have endured this deadliest of cancers.
