“Opportunity” was the word of the day Monday (Nov. 28) as eight new certified nursing assistants graduated from a unique program combining on-the-job training at St. Tammany Health System with classroom work at Northshore Technical Community College.

The six-month program, which started in June, is the result of a community partnership between the health system and the community college intended to expand educational and professional opportunities for local residents while also bolstering the local healthcare workforce.

“It is such a challenge to be in the healthcare field, but it’s also a privilege,” Bronwyn Doyle, the health system’s assistant vice president of Human Resources and Workforce Development, told the new graduates. “We want you to have an opportunity to grow with us, and this is step one – so, welcome to the St. Tammany Health System family.”

Northshore Technical Community College Chancellor William Wainwright echoed those sentiments, telling the graduates, “You have an incredible opportunity to grow with St. Tammany Health System and build an incredible career, and Northshore Technical Community College and St. Tammany Health System are here to help you in that journey.”

Those graduates honored Monday were: Stephanie Green, Corrin Hebert, J’ahn Hebert, Aaliyah McGowan, Kacie McKinzie, Michaela Rivera, Stephany Roberson and Sharnae Vick.

As nursing assistants, they will offer direct support to the health system’s nurses by performing such duties as gathering and stocking medical supplies, feeding patients, bathing patients and helping with their grooming, wound care, and more.

The program has proven so successful that it will continue, welcoming a new class of aspiring CNA’s in January.

Among those most pleased by the accomplishments of the new grads on Monday was STHS Chief Nursing Officer Kerry Milton, who welcomed them into the nursing profession.

“We are nurses, and we will say very fast that the role of the nursing assistant is the most important in helping us care for patients,” Milton said. “So congratulations – and grow with us.”
