It’s an unfortunate but unavoidable fact of life: Parenthood, alas, doesn’t come with an instruction manual. But now, St. Tammany Health System is teaming with the St. Tammany Parish Library to offer the next best thing.

On June 5, the health system and library will launch a free workshop series designed to teach new parents and caregivers what they can expect during their baby’s first year.

Dubbed “Parenthood Newbies,” the four-part series will be led by St. Tammany Health System pediatricians. The public is invited to attend. No registration is required.

See below for the full class schedule, including dates and locations. Questions? Call (985)871-1220 for details.

Session 1: Bringing Baby Home (The First Few Weeks)
6 p.m. June 5; Covington Branch Library (310 W. 21st Ave.)
In this session, we will look into what happens in the first few weeks of baby's life. Whether you've just given birth, adopted a new baby or you're a new grandparent and you need a refresher course, we will explore these such topics as: What should you expect? Why are we so tired? Is this common?

Session 2: Settling in (0-6 weeks)
6 p.m. June 12, Madisonville Branch Library (1123 Main St., Madisonville)
In this session, we will explore how life seems now that you've gotten to know your new baby. You're getting settled in, your baby's changing, and you're starting to know what they need and when they need it.

Session 3: Getting Out (3-6 months)
6 p.m. June 26; Causeway Branch Library (3457 U.S. 190, Mandeville)
In this session, we will explore the changes you will see in your baby in the next few months. Learn what milestones to watch for, food information, changes in mobility and more.

Session 4: Preparing for Toddlerhood (6 months+)
6 p.m. July 10; Covington Branch Library (310 W. 21st Ave.)
In this session, we’ll discover how babies grow into toddlers and how to prepare for this next phase in your baby's life.
