COVINGTON – The Women’s Pavilion of St. Tammany Parish Hospital is now offering 3D mammography and screening breast ultrasound, the only outpatient imaging facility on the Northshore providing both.

"This builds on our established breast cancer detection capabilities, particularly for women with dense tissue,” said Pam Ballard, pavilion manager, “and it’s timely given the Monica Landry Helo Early Detection Act, enacted Jan. 1.

“We are excited to provide advanced technology in a beautiful, serene and calming space,” she added. “St. Tammany Parish Hospital has a long history of excellence, and we pay particular attention to offering the best technology.”

The Monica Landry Helo Early Detection Act mandates all patients receive their results with narrative report and notice about dense breast tissue, even if the patient does not have dense tissue.

3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, increases likelihood of detecting invasive breast cancer by up to 41 percent while reducing the number of call backs by up to 40 percent. During a 3D exam, multiple images of the breast are taken at different angles. These images are compiled and viewed as a 3D reconstruction.

“We take great strides to provide patient-centered care,” said Dr. Jennifer Daly, pavilion medical director. “I like to meet with each of our diagnostic patients to show them their imaging, explain in detail the findings and answer questions. I want to be transparent and include my patient in care and management plan in a reassuring manner to provide the best patient experience.”

Women with dense tissue have the option to have a breast ultrasound screening. This is a quick, painless procedure used in conjunction with mammogram to better detect cancer in women with these issues.

Dr. Daly is a board-certified, breast fellowship-trained radiologist. The Women’s Pavilion is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, designated by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Located on Hwy 190 just north of I-12 in the Holiday Square Shopping Center, the pavilion features a relaxing spa-like setting with soft music, water and fireplace features and warm, soft robes. Appointments can be made by calling 985-773-1500.
