Social stories

St. Tammany Health System has created social stories for an autistic individual/individual with autism who might find entering the hospital or clinic unsettling and unfamiliar. Social stories are tools used to increase communication and exchange information safely, respectfully, and meaningfully. While using written and visual cues, social stories effectively provide guidance and increase understanding of what to expect during an upcoming visit or a procedure.

Video modeling

Video modeling is similar to social stories yet provides real-life or action-like visuals instead of pictures. These effective accommodations can decrease social stress by preparing the autistic individual/individual with autism on what to expect in face-to-face interactions. Video modeling also prepares one for the sensory environment by demonstrating what to anticipate or what to do when overstimulated.
